Skypephone: The good, the bad and the ugh.. missing!
Good:
In no particular order (I might tidy this up at some stage):
- Small size
- Build quality
- Lightweight
- Reasonable price (I don't want to be too generous - you can get a Nokia 6120 for twice the amount but it's a fully fledged 'smartphone')
- 'World time' app is quite handy
- Stereo Bluetooth support
- Half decent camera (certainly at this price point)
- USB charging
- Really fast transfer with PC
- It chargers and transfers at the same time
- Phone doesn't have to go offline to transfer stuff really fast
- Phone stays connected to PC even with lots of movement of the USB connector (don't even get me started on Nokia's pop-port connectors and how finnicky they are!)
Bad:
Again, in no particular order:
- No multitasking whilst running a java app (other than if you start the music player beforehand and control via bluetooth headset and apparently Windows Messenger can be run in the background)
- Nags each time a java app wants to go online (should at least have a way of turning this off)
- Lack of games and applications from/via 3
- Lack of BREW games/apps
- Speaker distorts
- Backlight stays on if you have the music player running in the foreground
- Despite having the 'World time' app it doesn't have a conversion app
- Can't change memory card without taking out battery
- Web browser doesn't have shortcuts to skip to the bottom or the top of a page
- Music player has 'issues' with some long audio tracks (such as hour long mixes)
- Ringtones aren't hidden from the music player
- Can't play h.264 MP4
- The LCD screen isn't really suitable for viewing stuff in landscape.
The missing: well stuff I'd miss if this was my only phone...
- Lack of decent podcast app
- Lack of streaming radio (3's own service is terrible)
- No decent GPS app (I need TomTom!)
- Nothing at all like Nokia Sports Tracker
- No Slingplayer support
To be honest most people don't use or need that stuff on their mobile. I do, I'm used to it and now can't imagine going without. This phone isn't really aimed at those that want that stuff and to be honest it does way more than most people would want as it is. The Skypephone costs ten times less than what my sister stumped up for an unlocked iPhone yet the Skypephone does so many things better. It's got faster internet for a start, does picture messaging, does videocalls (even if you have to use a mirror!) can do BT GPS and run java apps.
FWIW, I know this needs tidying up but I'm all strung out on Lemsip and Strepsils!
