Why have you got three phones?
I go away for a week and I still need my toys. This last trip was no different, I had to bring a whole bunch for various different reasons...
I had to take my N73 with me for the satellite navigation if nothing else. As I needed sat nav and because the N73 doesn't have GPS on board, I needed my bluetooth GPS.
As I'd only received my demo pair of Skypephones just days earlier, I needed to take one along with me - even if the Skype features wouldn't work in Spain.
And because I'd brought a Skypephone - and I'd loaded it up with musical goodness - it seemed like I needed to bring those Sony stereo bluetooth headphones.
Of course all these things needed chargers and I needed to bring a couple of wired headsets too (for the N73 and for watching video on the Skypephone).
At this stage of packing I decided my Nintendo DS Lite would be overkill. The DS Lite was probably the one thing I should've brought - there was free WiFi in the hostel but using their computers cost €1 per hour (I can be a real cheapskate sometimes!)
The dorm I was staying in only had three outlets/sockets for eight beds. Fortunately the dorm was rarely full and everyone else had a sensible number of electrical items and/or items with better battery life!
On the last night of their stay I had a long chat with the pair of Dutch girls that had been in the dorm since I got there. They originally thought I was Spanish - which goes a long way to explain why I'm constantly asked for directions in Spain, but I digress... They were curious as to why I had three phones - so I explained as best as I could! Summing up that one "phone" was really a GPS thingy-majig as I'm useless with directions and that one of the phones was given to me to try out. Had they heard of Skype? Yes, they had - they use it! Quite a lot if I remember correctly. Shame that a Skypephone would be of no use to them in the Netherlands as there's not a 3 network there!
Hmm, in written form it sounds like a crazy amount of tech to bring but in reality it wasn't that OTT! Just a shame Ryanair have a strict policy of no switched on phones on their flights even if they're in flight mode. On the way back I had nothing to keep me amused and, as my N73 has replaced my watch, I had no way of telling the time! I did ask the girl next to me what the time was but she was in the same boat, although she did kindly turn on her phone to find out for me! And her phone wasn't in flight mode! ;o) I'm able to type this because the plane didn't fall out of the sky!
