I'm about to embed a video below these words of mine. The video is of a hands-on demonstration that a bunch of so-called Mobile Geeks of London*, including my good self, witnessed last week.
In a nutshell this is augmented reality. Read up on it, this is the 'internet of things'. Point a phone at a special code (or at a distinguishable object/building/picture) and and added details will appear on screen superimposed on the live image of what your phone's camera sees.
Anyway... if I think this is so great, why would I not want you to see the videos? Well, for a start, they don't do the experience justice. And, you really should try it for yourself before you've seen the videos (it's more fun that way). The good thing is you will be able to try this for yourself if you have a suitable Nokia handset as there's an app on the way and codes to print out (actually, since typing this, the app is out - I'll post the link in my next post).
If you really want to see the video, here you go...
And there's more of them over at their YouTube channel: HERE
*'Cool Folk Who Like Getting the Most Out of Cellular Telephony Devices and Just Happen To Be in London Tonight', doesn't have the same ring.
Quite a busy day for announcements, the most exciting one being the new Nintendo DSi (in my humble opinion). Nokia's 5800 (you may know it as the 'Tube') is to be bigged-up in just over an hour but it doesn't excite me as much. The iPlayer on the N95 (as well as a bunch of other S60 handsets) is interesting and will be useful for many people, there's no content that interests me there though.
New DS has two bigger screens, two cameras and an SD slot. It will play the same games as the DS and DS Lite but may well have specially made games to utilise the cameras. I'm just speculating here but I imagine the inside camera could be used for video calls. Why else do you need two? Apparently there's a web browser built-in too. Hopefully it's better than the Opera one (Opera really dropped the ball on that one!)
The Nokia 5800 is all well and good but from what I know of it so far it's not peaking my interest. Maybe when it's officially revealed they'll be some goodies I wasn't expecting. I'll know in an hour!
BBC iPlayer widget works on my N95 8GB and works well from what I've seen so far. Having said that, they have Heroes listed but when you go to play it it comes up with an error. Did the BBC not get the rights to stream it to mobile? If so, they shouldn't display it on the mobile version. Oh, and it installs but doesn't work on the E71. That's a shame as the screen is already the right way up (landscape rather than portrait).
Just saw the following video over at Symbian Freak. All I can say is 'wow'! And, er, ask: Is this for real?
It's hard to tell from the above pictures what is so great about this game - so I'll clue you in if you don't know. You tilt your phone in the direction you want the ball to go. Simple! Anyone can pick it up and play. How the hell does the game know which way you point/tilt your phone? Well it has tilt sensors and accelerometers (much like the Wii-motes, iPhone and an ever increasing amount of digital cameras).
Got an N95 (8GB)? Go get the free game from here: Nokia 5500 Sport support
Sometimes things seem obvious to me and sometimes I'm completely unaware of what everyone else thinks is obvious. Where am I going with this? All About Symbian (for those unfamiliar, they report about all things Symbian - think Nokia Nseries handsets etc) have posted about the fact you can use the multimedia keys on the N95 as handheld console-like gaming buttons whilst playing games. I never thought about blogging about my "discovery" of this as I just figured I'd stumbled upon the obvious!
Maybe there's a case for Nokia's N-Gage people to advertise this? Yes, the Nokia N95 DOES have gaming keys
I got an email earlier from MyMemory (the online retailer, not my actual memory - that would be crazy!) The main thing they were trying to hock was a SanDisk SDHC card. The interesting thing about that was it prominently features what appears to be a Nokia N95 8GB next to it. Why's that interesting? The N95 8GB doesn't take memory cards!
Maybe Nokia released (or is releasing) a black version of the original N95 (the one that does take cards)? And perhaps they're styling it on the 8GB version, not the original? Still, I think it would've been wiser to have placed a picture of the most popular phone out at the moment that takes MicroSDHC cards to avoid any confusion!
A penny under £21 delivered would appear to be a good deal though... if your device accepts these!
...in fact almost any device with WiFi and a half-decent browser.
You'll also need a special device that looks kinda dinky (a bit like a Bluetooth GPS unit or mobile modem) and be in a country where there are DVB-H transmissions. So not much use in either the UK or US!

I had a play with the Nokia 6120 Classic - my sister's new phone - the other night, . I'd recommended it to her based on what I'd read/heard about it. I hadn't used one myself as, even at the Symbian Smartphone show back in October, most of the Nokia phones out on display were N95s or N95 8GBs. It was nice that not only did she seek my advice but that she actually took it!
My thoughts about the phone? It's quick, very quick. It's seems to be stable (it didn't crash or hang - but I only used it for 30 minutes). The screen looks great, although it is smaller than I'm used to. It's bright, it's very clear - it just looks nice, easy to read etc. The keypad is great, it's well spaced out and keys are logically placed. It's sturdy. The built-in browser is way better than on my creaking N73!
Unfortunately she's not got a data plan so I couldn't have too much fun with it. I would've loved to give Nokia Internet Radio a spin whilst using Sports Tracker or seeing if Nokia Maps is actually usuable on it (it's way too slow on my N73 - even if TomTom has no problems)
Would I want a 6120c as my next phone? If you'd asked me a few months ago, no. Now, not so sure. It does most things that I want (I believe it even does Slingplayer) but the camera is only 2MP, it has no WiFi and, although the screen is really nice, it's small. I also like the idea of having TV-out and accelerometers and neither are available on the 6120c, but I can live without them.
Anyone from Nokia out there reading this? If so, any chance I could score a 6120 Classic for a month (or two)? You don't ask you don't get! Well, sometimes you do when you don't. Anyway...
I'm really loving my Skypephone - so much so that I'm beginning to question my need to replace my N73 with an N95 (or N82 for that matter).
Looking at the 6120 Classic, it seems to do most of the things I need and seems the right size / form factor. Unlike many other Nokia phones there's no silly button layouts or silly sliding/swivel mechanism. In many ways it reminds me of the Skypephone - small, practical and powerful. But without giving it a go I won't know for sure! And I'd love to do a comparison with the Skypephone.
