I always like to be different and, I thought, what better way to be different with my Samsung i8910 (HD) than get Nokia Maps working on it - legitimately! Yes, that's right - no hacks, cracks, patches. The i8910 is pure as the day it was sent to me by the good folk PR folk at Samsung. And this copy of Nokia Maps (actually known as 'Maps on Ovi') which was, originally, meant for LG's S60 3rd Edition phones, is untouched too.
Despite the warnings during installation telling me that this app wasn't compatible with my device, here it is...
It loads incredibly quick - much faster than any version of Nokia or Ovi Maps I've ever used before on any other handset.
Probably not that practical whilst navigating the world on foot or, for that matter, whilst driving! Good job that Samsung throw in their own alternative, Route 66 - and of course, if you've got network coverage... there's Google Maps!
The biggest mobile handset manufacturer in the world won't be exhibiting at next year's Mobile World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM) in Barcelona.
They're putting the money aside for other stuff, such as marketing their products elsewhere - such as with us blogger folk.
I think they should be applauded for that! ;o)
(Update: Not a complete no-show after all - they'll be there, just not booth-wise, they be expensive!)

...yes, really!
Just download Nokia Magnifier from Nokia Beta Labs
When it's time to get a new mobile phone contract, you can use your existing Nokia and this app to help you read the small print! :D
Looks like Sony, Nokia and Nintendo (didn't I just type that..? Oh yeah, I did) are being sued for patent infringement (is that the correct legal term?*
*note to self, stop writing notes to myself and what's with all the brackets?
The latest version of Fring is just hot off the presses and, judging by the video the guys at the company have done, this could quite possibly be literally true. Check it out:
By the way the theme the guys are using on this S60 "handset" is one of my favourites and is available for free (somewhere) on S60.com
What is Fring and why is it worth blogging about? Well, go here to read up about it, and of course, check the video above! In a nutshell it brings together all sorts of wonderful things - like Skype, Yahoo!, Windows Live (MSN), AIM and a whole bunch more besides. Now that you can also listen to streams from Last.fm and soon be able to Tweet, it only gets better.
I've yet to install the latest version on my handset as I'm a bit busy today. So, in the meantime check out the company's own screenshots below:
This could quite possibly turn out to be the best day ever! Why? Er, did you not see the title of this post of mine? I've won half a million dollars from Nokia! It's still sinking in, I can hardly believe it... You know what? I don't believe it! Why the fudge would Nokia UK run a promotion from Thailand and give me US dollars as a prize? Why would they make it look so amateurish?
Why? Because they wouldn't. It is quite clearly a scam. Fortunately it's done so badly that only a complete and utter idiot would fall for it and, really, is that such a bad thing? It's Darwin but with money and not your life (now I'm singing Adam Ant in my head... nooooo!)
Just in case you're a complete moron, I've usefully highlighted a few things that seem amiss, such as really bad grammar (I know, pot and kettle!) and how the UK NOKIA PROMOTER is based in Thailand for some unknown reason. Of course, with outsourcing, big companies do locate whole swathes of their people all over the world - but they never make us dial a foreign number to talk to their foreign call centre!
Only a single CONGRATULATION from Mr Moore then? I guess he has to conserve them as, from a quick Google, I discovered I was far from alone in winning the 500k!
Now let's look at the WHOIS for nokiawebonline...
...and now for what nokiawebonline.com looks like:
I just wonder how many people fall for this kinda thing. It clearly jumps out to me as a scam, however others have clearly been taken in - at least judging from what I've read online about this (some accounts are from two years ago, so it's been going on a while too!)
I'm in a bit of a hurry, so I'll leave it to The Inq to explain (that was where I read it after all!)
Quite a busy day for announcements, the most exciting one being the new Nintendo DSi (in my humble opinion). Nokia's 5800 (you may know it as the 'Tube') is to be bigged-up in just over an hour but it doesn't excite me as much. The iPlayer on the N95 (as well as a bunch of other S60 handsets) is interesting and will be useful for many people, there's no content that interests me there though.
New DS has two bigger screens, two cameras and an SD slot. It will play the same games as the DS and DS Lite but may well have specially made games to utilise the cameras. I'm just speculating here but I imagine the inside camera could be used for video calls. Why else do you need two? Apparently there's a web browser built-in too. Hopefully it's better than the Opera one (Opera really dropped the ball on that one!)
The Nokia 5800 is all well and good but from what I know of it so far it's not peaking my interest. Maybe when it's officially revealed they'll be some goodies I wasn't expecting. I'll know in an hour!
BBC iPlayer widget works on my N95 8GB and works well from what I've seen so far. Having said that, they have Heroes listed but when you go to play it it comes up with an error. Did the BBC not get the rights to stream it to mobile? If so, they shouldn't display it on the mobile version. Oh, and it installs but doesn't work on the E71. That's a shame as the screen is already the right way up (landscape rather than portrait).
A lot in the news today about Ryanair's new use-your-phone-in-the-air service. Of course there's the usual moans about having to sit next to annoying loudmouth. But you know what, I'm not that annoying and hey, if I'm on the phone to someone, you're being spared from having to reply!
In all seriousness though, this is excellent news for us smartphone users who would like to use their phone's music/video/gaming and, er, timekeeping capabilities offline (aka 'flight mode'). Ryanair were one of only two airlines I've flown that wouldn't allow any phone to be switched on regardless of flight mode. That's a huge pain when all your time-killing stuff is tied up inside your Nokia.
