Currently I'm on a terrible mobile plan that no longer suits my needs. As much as I like 3 Mobile, their customer service sucks as does their inflexibility. There's a plan that would be ideal which is exactly the same cost as I'm paying right now. Will they let me change to it? Will they hell!
So, instead I have a plan that doesn't have anywhere near the amount of texts I need (damn you friends, family and acquaintances with your new fangled unlimited tariffs!). Can I get an add-on that gives me unlimited texts? Nope. Can I get an add-on that at least gives me a significant extra bunch for a reasonable sum? Again.. nope!
What does that leave me with? Well I'm in one of those bloody 18 month contracts. Off the top of my head, I don't think I'm yet halfway through it. I need more texts - that is that. The only sensible thing to do would seem to be to get a short term contract that offers me more texts and carrying yet another mobile around with me. As such I've been keeping an eye on what's on offer. Oh, and despite all of this - I'm still looking to 3 first, hence I discovered this...
(even though I was meant to be looking at contract, not PAYG...)
Note the price? Good! That was back in December. Now let's have a look at how much it costs two months later...
A couple of months ago, if you were using Quidco, you could've had the INQ1 on PAYG for just £58.99... see
That price rise pales into insignificance when you look at how much the Sony Ericsson W595 has gone up (I believe it's around £50 more expensive on PAYG now!)
I still don't know what to do. Right now I'd just be happy to be able to use the internet I'm paying for on my existing phone to work. As it is its routinely blocking my attempts to connect and as such MMS and push email isn't working either. But that sorry state of affairs is for another post entirely!
I've been playing around with Windows Movie Maker since getting my hands on a trial Toshiba Tecra M9. It's beefy enough to handle video editing with ease and nice and portable (okay, it's not UMPC/netbook portable, but it's small and light enough to accompany me most places).
So, in the last few weeks I've shot some video on DV camcorders, done some rudimentary editing, added some titles and uploaded them to YouTube. They're pretty crappy to be honest, but that's more to do with my skills (or lack thereof) than the tools at hand. There's plenty of room for improvement but improve they will!
...with great difficulty!
The Sony Ericsson W595 that 3 kindly gave me a few weeks ago at their 'The Darkside' spookfest has made it's way into my oldest nephew's hands. That was always my plan. As much as I liked it, it's not the kind of phone I need. But it was fun - something sorely lacking in most other handsets I've used.
Was a bit problematic returning it to it's original out-of-the-box like state though. First of all I wanted to get all the text messages off it and on to a laptop. That required the software suite found on the supplied CD. Trouble was the supplied CD wouldn't work in the laptop so I had to download it instead. Was it an easy process once installed? Kinda. No. Not really. Got their eventually though!
Okay, so I archived the SMSes and transferred photos and music over. All I needed to do was completly reset the phone/clear the memory. Shame it wasn't all that easy! 'Master reset' removed all added software and changed all settings back to default. It cleared a game I purchased (I figured it would) but none of the pictures or songs. Was there a way to clear the memory card (a la 'format')? Not that I could find. I could only delete file by file, or folder by folder.
As someone that regularly tries different handsets, I wish there were easier ways to sync/backup/transfer all the content off of any phone with any other phone.
Hopefully my nephew will get a lot of fun out of it. I've told him he's got the net on it for a few weeks. He's just started using MSN and is about to get on Bebo so the phone should be ideal (well, as soon as Windows Messanger launches on the W595!). First thing he put on the phone? Pac-Man! It comes with the handset, but he paid the £6 for the licence (yes, £6!)
Taken a couple of weeks ago...
...and in the shop window of the same store:
Had I realised the Yahoo! thing was only a quid, I'd have broken open my piggy bank! As for the Playmobil coliseum. WTF?!? Interestingly this was being sold in a store owned by a man who had an encounter with God. He doesn't sell dark stuff such as Harry Potter toys (and presumably Scooby Doo). Maybe this doesn't come with Christian figures to throw to the Playmobil lions?
Today I got an automated MMS from 3 informing me that Mobile Mail was ready for my consumption. I clicked on a link therein contained and lo and behold Sony Ericsson phones are now supported. Unfortunately the W595 that 3 made such a big deal about launching last week wasn't listed. D'oh! What's a push email-deprived guy to do? Why, I just selected the first 'W' handset on the list and you know what? It works!
As Salt, or Pepa, once said, 'Push it, push it real good'.
Okay, yet another less than excellent video from me related to the new love of my live. Well love would be a bit strong, we're just kinda hanging out for a couple of weeks... y'know a bit of fun, see how things go...
I should point out to anyone that's watched the video - not all the games listed are full games, some are just demos!
The following is just my second video on YouTube, but it's my first using a proper video camera and some videoediting software. Quality should be better than using a camera phone, but it's still pretty amateurish.
A brief summary for those unable to see the video... This is a demonstration (by yours truly) of the Music Mate 5 application that is pre-loaded on the Sony Ericsson W595. A rather fun phone that I received in a goodie bag last week at 3 UK's launch event to celebrate their UK exclusive. Yay me! The app uses the handset's built-in motion sensor so that you can play the drums just by waving it as if it were a drum stick.
Thanks goes to 3 for giving me the handset, talkToshiba for lending me a laptop that has the umph to do DV editing quickly and my parents for letting me use their ADSL (my place is still without!)
I've now had in my possession for a week the Sony Ericsson W595. I'm still loving it and still flumoxed by it. I've also videoed the handset in use and just need to edit and upload.
I used my DV camcorder and have the video on my loaned Toshiba Tecra M9. I just need to get to grips with the editing process (I'm a newbie!) and what format I need to convert my clips to before I upload them. Oh, and I need to know the best place to upload them to. I've got a YouTube account, so I presume that will be the best bet.
Whatever format I choose, I think the best bet is to head to the land of ADSL (my folks!) as mobile broadband isn't best suited to uploading files in the double digits MB-wise!
It was an unusually warm day today here in Blighty (well at least in this part). I have no ADSL at home at the moment and my parents' broadband was flaky (sort it out Sky, I'm switching to you too and won't put up with that!) What's a guy supposed to do? Go on a walk, that's what. With a Walkman phone.
I could put that brand spanking new Sony Ericsson W595 through its paces while I'm pacing, I thought to myself. And so I did. Below are some pictures I took along the way.
Here's the Pyrenees and here's a bunch of other photos...
Good job I knew where I was going as the phone doesn't have GPS built-in, more's the pity. However it does have support for "location services" via the 'GPS Enabler' HGE-100. I haven't got one of those yet, so have no idea how that works and what the services are.
I'm still getting to grips with the handset and have only started to read the manual. Hopefully any gripes I have with it are down to me not doing things the right way or not understanding how the UI behaves/should work. Things like the web browser closing down when you bring up another app, or what seems like a long drawn out process trying to switch tasks.
The main task being the music player, the camera (obviously), the phone (you know to actually make a call!) and Google Mail.
Oh, and The Darkside (if you're wondering what that's got to do with the price of carrots) - there's now video on YouTube* of 3's spine-chilling spooktacular. Was I really scared? No, not really... I had to speak to quite a few of the undead this week over the phone (Tiscali!) and a couple came to life (well, they sounded quite animated). :-D
*I've yet to see if I'm on there, to be honest I barely remember the 'rusty lift shaft' as I'd drank too much complimentary alcohol (it complimented the alcohol I'd already drunk). Really fun evening and nothing like what neither I, nor anyone else, was expecting.
Cheers to 3, the 3mobilebuzz gang (you know who you are), I guess Sony Ericsson (presume they had some small hand in it too), the lady that kept topping me up and the guy from Pocket Lint for not knocking me out. When one's drunk, shortsighted and doesn't have one's glasses - one ends up staring out total strangers thinking they're someone completely different but one can't figure out who!
Always good to see Ben from Mobile Industry News, Abul from adonismobile and Miss Geeky, Melinda. (BTW Abul, I found the link to the YouTube channel from your blog - cheers!)
No pictures yet I'm afraid. Talking about being afraid, I was scared senseless at 3's The Darkside launch last night. Some mysterious force prevented my camcorder (with nightvision) from working. When I left my place yesterday my battery meter told me I had over 200 mins of battery life. However, when I turned it on inside One Marylebone Road it was completely DEAD spooky!
Anyway, where was I?
Oh yes, Google Maps Mobile on the Sony Ericsson W595. Like other attendees, I received a brand spanking new phone (guess which one?) and £30 worth of credit on the pre-installed SIM. Nice! I've installed Opera Mini and Google Maps - hence this post!
Unfortunately the only version of Maps that works doesn't do GPS (neither does the phone, but I've got a couple of Bluetooth units kicking around). It does still attempt to find your location utilising mobile phone masts. It's pretty accurate even on the outskirts of town. Funny thing is that the dot showing my location is just a couple of houses away from my parents house - which is about a mile away from me.
If i were at their house right now, I'd be pretty damn impressed! More to come later, I've still got the shakes (trembling with fear still, or too much champagne!) BTW cheers guys for inviting me, it's always fun and I really wasn't expecting the phone in the goodie bag.. crikey!)
